In the vast expanse of Saudi Arabia's Rub' al Khali Desert, as the sun slowly sinks behind the dunes, a convoy of SHACMAN X3000 heavy-duty trucks crosses the Gobi in a display of sheer power. This is more than just a delivery; it's about transporting Saudi Arabia's green future 700 kilometers inland, from a port on the Persian Gulf to the heart of the desert.
The AGA Wind Power Project is a key clean energy initiative for Saudi Arabia's energy transition. Its wind turbines are some of the largest in the country, with single blades measuring 98 meters and a rotor diameter of 200 meters. Transporting these massive components inland presented a hellish challenge.
A 103-Meter Giant on the Move
Loaded onto X3000 tractor, the total length of the vehicle and cargo reached 103 meters, with a total weight of 200 tons. To handle such an extreme task, X3000 is equipped with a flagship WP13 engine, providing a powerful 550Ps of traction.
The 16-ton wide rear axle features a dual-stage reduction and a large 5.92 speed ratio, significantly boosting torque output for heavy-load transport. Paired with a multi-axle hydraulic flatbed trailer, the truck securely carried the hundred-meter "steel wings." To cope with long-duration, high-load operations, X3000 is fitted with special tires on both the front and rear, which offer superior heat dissipation and reliability.
With its powerful traction and precise handling, X3000 not only conquered undulating dunes and the Gobi, but also navigated narrow city streets. The "steel giant wings" danced on the horizon, turning heavy-duty transport into an art form.
Engineering Against the Extreme Heat
Extreme heat is an unavoidable obstacle. In the Rub' al Khali Desert, the sun bakes the air to 50°C, and the ground temperature can reach nearly 70°C, putting X3000's reliability and comfort to a severe test.
Hauling a 200-ton load in such scorching heat puts an immense strain on the transmission. That's why X3000 is specially equipped with an independent transmission oil cooling system. This system ensures the oil temperature remains within the optimal working range, guaranteeing a stable power output during prolonged high-temperature operations.
To enhance the truck's durability, X3000 chassis is coated with a polyurea spray finish. This high-molecular coating effectively resists impact from flying sand and gravel. Additionally, to ensure a comfortable cab for the driver, X3000 features an electronically controlled automatic constant-temperature climate system powered by a world-class compressor. It effectively blocks the 50°C heat, allowing the driver to focus on vehicle control.
The powerful thermal management and high-temperature-resistant design of X3000 convoy allowed it to drive with confidence, "coolly" crossing the scorching Gobi.
The Journey's End
After a 700-kilometer journey, the massive wind turbine blades finally arrived safely. They will stand tall in the Rub' al Khali Desert, harnessing the powerful winds to create clean energy that will light up homes.
